Trial by Battle is the first volume of a history of the Hundred Years War, the long and violent endeavor of the English to dismember Europe's strongest state France, which began in the 1330s and lasted until their final expulsion from France in the middle of the 15th century. this succession of destructive wars in one of the great chapters of European history. It formed the two principal nation-states of Europe. It brought turmoil and ruin not only to both the main protagonists, but to the neighboring communities of Scotland, Germany, Italy and Spain. The present volume I based on a careful study of the published and unpublished sources for the war. It traces the origin of the conflict, the early humiliations and triumphs of Edward III, and the great campaigns of Sluys, Crecy and Calais which first made his name as a war leader, and the reputation of his subjects as the most brutally effective warriors of their time.
